Visual Poem: Why I am not a Painter

Photo Poem: Why I am not a Painter.
Image: Chemigram on photographic paper.

-
I want to drink Strega
with Frank O'Hara
and talk to Wallace about
periwinkles and baboons
sing Changes with Phil Ochs
have Sylvia read The Rival
and sleep over
on the sofa at the Poets' House.

What's left?

Frank is poised
his pen like a chemically sharpened chisel
sculpting eulogistic words:

Like the caged parrot
at night
I cover your paintings
in stout black cloth,
to make them sleep.

You have no talent for this.

Your work sulks on my walls
like a child
with dinner in its hair
crying for pudding.
