Visual Art: Ladder of impossible positivity

The Ladder of Impossible Positivity is a conceptual visual artwork exploring the relationship between negativity and positivity and if these forces have equal strength. It is an abstract conceptual work using watercolour paint on black paper.

The composition of the image is defined by a diagonal line that essentially bisects the frame. The colour palette below and above this line are in dark and light contrast. There appears to be a figure in white trying to ascend the bisecting line. This line represents The Ladder of Impossible Positivity.

The figure seems to be held back by a much larger object. This object represents negativity. Negativity seems to be impeding, but not overcoming the figure’s progression. The picture conveys a sense of imbalance however, is there a turning point at which the negative downward force will arrest progression or even cause the figure to fall?

The image reflects on mental struggles and the creative tensions between positive and negative thought.

- From the project A Topology of Nothingness, a series of visual art pictures created using art therapy and meditations on mental health and wellbeing, using several methods of free expression including drawing, painting, and conceptual photography. The body of work is a reflection on mental health, depression and the trap of negative thinking and hopelessness.
